Quarantini: The Sawpit

These recipes were originally created in conjunction with my article Marvelous Martini’s which was originally published in the May/June 2019 issue of Pottery Making Illustrated, which featured my process for creating my 2 part porcelain martini cups. I thought it was the perfect time to release the recipes separately, so you can enjoy while you’re practicing self-isolation and social distancing. Try sharing one with a friend via a virtual happy hour on Facetime or Zoom! Enjoy responsibly.

The Sawpit

This cocktail is named after the town in which I live. Port Chester, NY was a large ship building community back in the 1800’s and was often referred to as “the sawpit” due to the large pits dug for timber to build the ships. Port Chester is a village with all the grit and pep you will find in this concoction!

1 ½ oz  Vodka
1oz Coffee Liqueur
½oz Orange Curacao or Grand Marnier
¼oz  Creme de Cacao
1oz Espresso, cooled

Add all ingredients in a shaker. Top with ice. Shake vigorously.

Use bar strainer to strain again through a mesh strainer into a martini glass.

Garnish: rim half the glass by dipping half of the rim into orange liqueur or sugar syrup and then into cocoa powder. Candied orange zest is another great garnish.

Tasting Notes: instead of an espresso with a twist of lemon, try this after dinner drink of rich espresso and zesty orange. The coffee flavor is amplified by the coffee liqueur and the creme de cacao and cocoa rim bring an interesting depth to the drink. A bit of orange at the end brightens everything up and helps prevent any bitterness from the espresso.
